Bartolozzi, Rafael

Rafael [Lozano] Bartolozzi, Pamplona, 1943-Vespella de Gaià, Tarragona, 2009. An artist of intense creativity who has left his mark in painting, engraving, illustration, ceramics, exterior building décor (Tipel Factory at Parets del Vallés), interventions and demonstration events, in addition to the most flexible and contemporary form of sculpture. In 1964 he established links with Cataluña, studying at the Higher School of Fine Arts of San Jorge (Barcelona) and at the School of Mural Painting at Sant Cugat del Vallés. At these schools, he met Eduardo Arranz Bravo, and they worked in partnership from 1965 to 1983. Although both artists started out from traditional classicism they gradually moved towards new realisms (neo-dada movement, pop art) expressed with a surrealist language, evocative of the beginnings of the «Dau al Set» informalist group and with Picasso, Miró and Dalí as pacesetters. With a keen interest in his surroundings, he sought to integrate sculpture into the bustling city atmosphere, seeking a contrast with the perennial nature of monuments (such as the Plaza de la Paz square in Pamplona or the fountain-sculptures for the City Council of Barcelona). His work can be found, amongst other places, in the Contemporary Art Museums of Sevilla, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Villafamés (Castellón), Malpartida (Cáceres), Cadaqués (Girona), Ibiza, Reina Sofía Art Centre in Madrid, MACBA (Barcelona) and Museum of Navarra, «Salvador Allende» Museum of the Resistance (Santiago de Chile) and Museum of Nicaragua. He collectively represented Spain at the Venice Biennial in 1980. In 1992 he was awarded the Grand Prize at the 10th International Biennial of Sport in Fine Arts (Barcelona).
