Aizkorbe, Faustino

Faustino [Gil] Aizkorbe, Olloqui, 1948, is from the world of design and painting. The training “schools” for this self-taught artist were the natural surroundings of his homeland and the Basque artisan tradition, with that tragic and austere vein common to sculptors such as Chillida, Basterrechea, Mendiburu, and Oteiza. It was in 1975 when a sculptor from Orio living in Alzuza (Navarra) saw in Fustino a new generation of Basque sculptors, rooted in «operational structuralism» and «the spiritual desire to explain reality as our (the Basque) biography with space». Oteiza was then of the opinion that Aizkorbe was dealing with the conversion of the suprematism of Malevich, by bringing it closer to a «Basque suprematism of a radically different nature», eminently experimental, with poetic roots, which should flee from the contamination of expressive beauty and seek its raison d”être in the «internal logic of creating». He uses the most advanced techniques to work with wood, bronze, corten steel, black stone from Calatorao and Marquina and Carrara marble, to give these materials a remarkable, formal perfection. His aim is for public sculpture to bring peace and to diffuse the drama of this modern age. His works can be found outdoors in Pamplona, Toledo, Lanzarote, Tarragona, Stuttgart and Tokio; at the March Foundation, Art Center International in Nice, Schwäbische Bank in Stuttgart and Banco de Bilbao in Tokio, in addition to in the Museum of Navarra and Museum of Modern Art in Pollença, a city in which he was awarded the Gold Medal at the 4th International Sculpture Contest.
