Ferrán, Leopoldo

A versatile artist born in Irun, Guipuzcoa in 1963. Following an initial period of training in the Basque Country, in 1994 he decided to go into artistic partnership with Agustina Otero (San Adrian del Valle, Leon 1960), for the purpose of jointly creating installation art to investigate and make in-depth studies of the plastic language. In 1997, both were awarded a Scholarship from the Provincial Council of Guipuzcoa and, in the year 2000, a Scholarship from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Grants from the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Guipuzcoa. All this served to allow them to travel through a number of places in order to complete their training.Following two years in Florence, a further two in Paris and a stay in the south of Senegal, this team of artists set up a studio in the north of Spain, first in Hondarribia (Guipuzcoa) and later in Ituren. The artistic transhumance of Agustina Otero and Leopoldo Ferrán has led them to set up their studio in an idyllic meadow in Ituren (Navarra), in an exceptional refuge at the foot of mount Mendaur, where this pair of creators are striving to complete their latest and most ambitious sculptural - architectural works. Both artists have managed to move away from normal methods, in order to combine painting and sculpture with video and photography, aiming to become "investigators of space". A cloud of barbed wire hanging one metre off the ground; goatskin parchment secured by wires; a labyrinth of raised gangways which impact against the walls; 36 aluminium spheres interlinked by very tight thread ... are just some examples of the installation art of Ferrán and Otero.

Their major exhibitions include the one entitled «Mazarredo 3 5 2» at the Rekalde Gallery of Bilbao in 1995, and the «Hem to pan» exhibition at the Sala del Horno hall at the Citadel of Pamplona. In 1996, they presented the exhibit «El reloj del tiempo» at the Reales Atarazanas in Valencia. In 1997 their work was exhibited at the Gustavo Maeztu Museum in Estella, with the exhibition «Tutto sone isole» and in Vitoria, at the former water tower, entitled «Cartografía para el corredor de un delta sin mar». In 1998, they exhibited in Italy and at the Fundación Miró in Barcelona. In 2000 they presented an exhibition in Madrid, specifically at the Salvador Díaz Gallery. Also in 2000, their work was exhibited at the Moisés Pérez de Albéniz Gallery in Pamplona, with the title «Aptitud, potencia u ocasión para ser o existir las cosas», and they went on to exhibit there in 2002 with the exhibit entitled «Morar». In 2007, their work was exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum of Leon. These artists have but few works in the area of public sculpture. Leopoldo Ferrán has works at the Señorío de Bértiz nature park and at the crematorium of the Cementery of Pamplona. In 2006, Ferrán and Otero installed their most recent public work entitled Sirenas, in the town of Irun.
