Orella Unzué, Alberto José

From a very young age, Alberto José Orella Unzué (Pamplona, 1943) displayed an artistic vocation, alternating his passion for sculpture with his higher education and Philosophy studies. He studied Ecclesiastic Sciences in the University of Navarre, and following a period of religious vocation, he re-entered civil life, dedicating his career to the art world. After his initial period of self-taught training, between 1988 and 1991 he completed his Degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country, a direction which would culminate in his doctorate thesis on Sound in Contemporary Visual Arts, encouraged by Jorge Oteiza. He continued his studies in France, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany, creating works in Rome with the Franciscan sculptor Andrea Martini. He also complemented his creative work with a spell of teaching in the nineties at the Arts and Crafts School in Pamplona, where he gave classes on “Casting and Modelling”. He was also the director of the Sala Galearte, in Curia street. From the 1970s onward, he began to make public appearances, the first being in the hall of the Caja de Ahorros Municipal de Pamplona de Conde Rodezno (1976). From this moment on he participated in numerous exhibitions, both individual and collective, held in various Spanish cities. His work is currently displayed in the Pamplona City Council Contemporary Art Collection. He is also the author of various religious images destined for temples and churches in Pamplona, the bust of José María Iribarren in the like-named education centre, and his sculpture “Diálogo a seis”, form a part of the sculptural decoration around the Vuelta del Castillo park. Likewise, examples of his work can be found across Spain, France, Belgium and Italy.
