Clemente Ochoa, Manuel

Manuel Clemente Ochoa, Cascante, 1937. This sculptor, painter and engraver studied Fine Arts at the School of San Jorge in Barcelona (1957-1961), after successfully completing his studies in Teacher Training and Arts and Crafts at the School of Zaragoza in 1957. He obtained a Secondary School professorship of drawing in 1962 and went on to a professorship at the University School of La Laguna (Canary Islands 1963-1968) and then Barcelona (1968). He was a professor of visual and plastic expression at the Central University of Barcelona. Professors Marés and Labarta in Barcelona were important influences in his training. He also favoured ongoing self-learning, boosted by visits to Spanish, French and Italian museums, where he analysed the legacy of the classical artists and identified himself with abstract sculptors (J. González, Picasso, Moore, Oteiza, Chillida, Serrano) and other vital expression artists (El Greco, Miguel Ángel, Goya, Van Gogh). His sculptural work is exhibited in a number of museums, such as those of Modern Art of Lanzarote, Contemporary Art of Villafamés (Castellón); Fine Arts of Zaragoza and Navarra;in France, in the Municipal Museum of Vence; in Italy, in the Municipal Museum Limone Piamonte; in the Rocsen Museum of Nono (Argentina) and the D"Encamp Museum of the Principality of Andorra. Major exhibitions: Institute of Hispanic Studies of Puerto la Cruz (Tenerife, 1965), Anthological Exhibition of the Citadel of Pamplona (1985), University of Barcelona (1989), Royal River of Yokohama, Japan. Collective exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia. Principal distinctions and prizes: Academy of Merit of the International Academy of San Marcos (Italy), Honorary Distinction of the Association of Art Critics (Miami. USA), Prize «Ville de Vence» (Antibes, France), International «Arte y Cultura» Prize from the Academy of St Marcos (Italy), «Atenea de Oro» 1978 (Turin. Italy) and Targa Europe 1980 (Rome).
